Advanced dynamic clamp system with double patch clamp recording
In collaboration with Dr. Thomas Nowotny (University of Sussex) and Felix Kern (University of Tokyo), we further advanced the dynamic clamp system they had developed, called StdpC system. With the new system, the model neurons and synapses implemented in the system allow us to construct any neural circuit between real neurons. In addition, the system allows adding simulated neural noise to investigate the role of noise in neural dynamics.
This system allows us connecting neurons that are not connected in real life. For example, one neuron is recorded somewhere on earth and the other on Mars (by sending a neurophysiologist there) and the two neurons can still be connected! More realistically, neurons from two different animals (with, e.g. different genetic conditions) can be connected and the dynamics of their interactions can be investigated.
