Ball N' Chain

Writer: Naoki KogoNaoki Kogo

One day, Big Mama Thornton (BMT) was asked by Janis Joplin (JJ) to let her sing the song, Ball N' Chain. BMT OK'd it. And JJ made her famous performance of the song at Monterey and Woodstock.

If anything, there was a beauty in the performance, her wanting to reach the height she disparately wanted to reach but not being able to do it. Giving everything she got trying to reach there -she would sell her soul to the devil to get there- the heart of wanting to be up there...but not able to do it.

Same with Herzog and Kinski. Their passion was so strong, their ideal was so high -"the fever dreams" as he once said- but they could never reach there. And struggled. Almost comical, almost like Don Quixote-isque. But beautiful.

Sigh.

Yea, fever dreams...

I like Big Mama Thornton's original version of Ball N' Chain better, by the way.
